In a bid to make exercise more accessible on the dark winter nights, ‘Ireland Lights Up’ will see participating clubs turn on their floodlights/lighting systems between 7-pm-9pm each Thursday for a six-week period (17th January – 21st February, 2019) as Operation Transformation returns to our screens in the New Year.

We are delighted to hear your GAA club is coming on board to partake in this year’s 'Ireland Lights Up' initiative. More than 150 clubs across the country participated in this exciting initiative last year. This year we hope to double this figure and encourage all clubs who meet the criteria to sign up.
The GAA, in partnership with RTÉ's Operation Transformation, and supported by Healthy Ireland and Get Ireland Walking, hope to bring together communities across the 32 counties to enjoy healthy walks in the safe environs of their own GAA club.
As part of 'Ireland Lights Up' a clear narrative is required to create the biggest impact. This will require all participating clubs to turn on their floodlights and open up their clubs at 7pm each Thursday for six weeks (January 17th to February 21st). (Clubs are welcomed to run additional days during this period. However, Thursday evenings are compulsory for the duration of Ireland Lights Up.)
Ideally the walks should take place on a purpose-built walking track/surface. If this is unavailable at the club, a safe track will be suitable. To ensure safety, clubs will be required to carry out a risk assessment on the track/walkway and put controls in place to deal with any potential risks. Every Thursday the club’s designated walking leaders will be required to take a registration list of all participants (registration template attached). This is designed to protect the club from exposure to insurance risk and will allow all clubs involved to establish the total number of participants each week. Please check the club meets the criteria.
Club participant numbers will be given to RTÉ's Operation Transformation team each week and the accumulative numbers will be aired live on the show the following Thursday. This is to ensure we can establish final numbers each week and evaluate the success of 'Ireland Lights Up'.
